'The Thieving Magpie' is a comic opera and was produced in Milan in r8r7, and in London four years later, where it became very popular. The Overture is more simple in construction than most of Rossini's other Overtures : it consists of two sections, the first in a rather majestic rhythm of martial character, and the second is based on a fast three in a bar melody, which is typical of the composer's style.

'Lord Rendal' is one of the oldest of folk ballads and it is to be found in one version or another in the national folk lore of many nations other than our own. The tale the ballad has to tell, therefore, may not be English at all. As with most folk ballads, the story is told with an art that is all the more remarkable for its concentration and simple poignancy. A young man, in this case Lord Rendal, has returned home from a visit to the girl he loves; he complains that he is sick and 'fain would lie down'. To his mother's anxious questions he replies in such manner that it is clear he has been poisoned by the girl he has just left and expects to die. Whatever the story, the tune is undoubtedly English, and as such is included in Cecil Sharp's wonderful collection of English folk songs.
Listeners who heard a recent broadcast of Dame Ethel Smyth's The Boatswain's Mate may recollect that this very song was incorporated in the opera, and was sung, to other words, of course, by Mrs. Waters in the first act.
