THE STORY of the opera centres in and around Seville, in Spain. In the first act, Carmen, put under arrest for disturbing the peace, puts Don Jose , in charge of the Guard, under her spell and persuades him to let her escape. In the second act, Don Jos é, released from prison, meets Carmen in an inn and throws in his lot with her. The third act is in the mountains among the smugglers ; it is clear that Carmen has tired of Don Jose and is about to follow Escamillo, the Toreador, to whom she is attached. The fourth act takes place outside the entrance to the bull-ring. Carmen, now wholly attached to Escamillo, accompanies him to the gate of the arena where he is to fight, and is left alone. Jose has been lying in wait for her, and after pleading in vain for her love to be given him again, kills her in a frenzy of jealousy.
