Conducted by CARL SCHURICHT IN MARCH, 1877, through the interest of Sir Charles Stanford, Joachim sent the parts of the recently finished First Symphony to the Cambridge University
Musical Society, which played the ; symphony for the first time in this country. The work was hailed with special delight by Cambridge, not only for its own sake, but because of a rather striking coincidence. The horn passage near the beginning of the movement uses the notes of the chimes familiar to all Cambridge as ' The Cambridge Quarters', and the University hailed that as a particularly happy omen for the first performance of the work there.
