Symphony, composed in 1924 is perhaps the most introspective of all his works. It is certainly the most severely condensed. Indeed, measured by mere text-book definitions, it is not a symphony at all for it consists of only one movement But into this single movement is packed enough thought to fill out any symphony of normal length. No break or padding interrupts the continuity of the argument. Even the changes of tempo, big as they are, occur gradually and almost imperceptibly.
