Stanford's opera The Travelling Companion, which was so. finely produced at Sadler's Wells in 1935, is based on one of Hans Andersen's most fantastic tales. Many readers will remember about the good young man who saved a corpse from desecration and got in return a Travelling Companion of amazing resource and almost unlimited powers, who outguessed the beautiful witch-princess and won for his young friend her hand and the reversion of the kingdom.
