In the grounds of the City Hall, Belfast, stands the statue of a rifleman which you see in the photograph on this page. Around it every year on December 10 a small party gathers to pay tribute to the men of the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles who fell in the South African War. This date is chosen because it is the anniversary of the battle and retirement at Stormberg in 1899. Tonight's programme will give you an impression of the event the ceremony commemorates. Taking part in it will be two members of the regiment, who will tell in their own words the story of the tragic events of forty years ago.
