The opening scenes of ' THE TOWER' by Christopher Fry
Produced by E. Martin Browne from the West Door of Tewkesbury Abbey
The programme introduced by E. Martin Browne with When extensive repairs to Tewkesbury Abbey became so necessary that a £25.000 appeal had to be launched, John Moore organised a week's drama festival in order to raise funds. Two others have since been held, and this year's is the fourth.
Drama to help towards the cost of repairs is in keeping with old tradition, for when the spire fell in Queen Elizabeth's time plays were performed in the Abbey to raise money.
E. Martin Browne is the producer at this year's Festival. Barrie's last play The Boy David and a pageant play The Totcer by Christopher Fry are to be performed in front of the beautiful West End of the Abbey.
In the broadcast this evening
E. Martin Browne will give a short descriptive commentary, and part of the pageant play will be heard by listeners.
The Tower tells the story of the Abbey and what it stands for.
