This is the first religious service broadcast from Tewkesbury Abbey. The choir and both organs, including the Harris organ on which Milton played when it was at Hampton Court, have been relayed before. The Abbey is famous for its Norman tower, the great arch above the Norman Doorway, and the massive pillars of the nave. The murdered Duke of Clarence was buried under a vault behind the high altar. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the burgesses ransomed the Abbey Church from the Royal spoiler. After eight centuries the condition of the structure has made it necessary for an appeal for £25,000 to be issued in order that it may be preserved unimpaired for posterity ; and a body known as ' The Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey ' has been formed tojurther this appeal.
