(Warlock)
(based on four poems by Yeats)
John Armstrong (baritone)
Robert Murchie (flute)
Terrence MacDonagh (cor anglais) and The International String Quartet
Peter Warlock 's song cycle ' The Curlew' was begun in 1920 and finished some two years later. The four poems are all by W. B. Yeats , three from the volume ‘ The Wind Among the Reeds' and the fourth from ' In Seven Woods '. Except for the close of the third song, the mood of the whole cycle is one of dark despair. According to the composer: '"The Curlew" should not be regarded as a set of songs, but rather as a piece of chamber music in one continuous movement, whose mood is defined by four poems by W. B. Yeasts. ' It is dedicated to Cecil Gray , the critic and composer.
