Lot 163, a violoncello by Antonio Stradivari
Lot t64, A violoncello by Nicolo Amati
Lot 165, A violin by Antonio Stradivari
broadcast from Puttick and Simpson's Rooms, New Bond Street
(See the article on page 8)

The many listeners who were interested in the broadcast of the sale of historic jewels in a famous West-End auction room last summer will look forward to hearing a similar broadcast - this time of the sale of a Stradivari violoncello, an Amati violoncello, and a Stradivari violin, at Puttick and Simpson's sale-rooms in New Bond Street.

The scene will be set by Michael Standing, who will describe the instruments to be sold, then listeners will hear a record of music played on each instrument -
records made this morning. Then Mr. Rylatt, clerk of the sale, will give a commentary describing the bidding and the tentative buyers. The silence of the bidding will indicate, as every auctioneer will know, that big prices are going.
It is of interest that the Strad cello was originally an instrument of large dimensions dating from about 1690 to 1698. It was skilfully reduced in size to bring it into conformity with the instruments made by the master after 1700. The alteration, it is believed, was carried out by Claude-Victor Rambaux, of Paris.
