The Polish composer, Moritz Mosz kowski, who died in Paris in 1925, is best known to listeners by music of the lighter type, his Serenata, his piano-duets, ' From Foreign Parts ', and the ballet music (particularly the ' Malaguefia ') from his opera Boabdil. 
This Suite, dedicated to the Royal 
Philharmonic Society of London, the first of two such compositions, is a good example of his more serious vein, and will probably give listeners to whom it is unknown an enhanced respect for Moszkowski's skill as a craftsman. The charming, scherzo-like second movement and the graceful Intermezzo (No. 4) are as pretty as anything he ever wrote, while the brilliant ' perpetuum mobile ' finale is full of novel effects. But most listeners will probably agree that the gem of the Suite is the set of variations that constitutes the third movement.

For the seventh and last time this evening Wilfrid Rooke Ley as the elderly gentleman in the cloak is to sit in the café garden amid the perfumes of flowers on the southern night, sip his vermouth, and with mixed feelings watch and listen to the rapture of a young couple who have dropped in. The romance that is behind him is in their voices and in the songs they sing. And to and fro, with his tray, moves Dino Galvani as the waiter. 
This happy idea, devised by the Director of Variety and carried out by Rooke Ley and Walford Hyden , has been a popular winner ever since it was put on the air in October last.

Introduction to

' Siegfried' Act II of Wagner's Opera

Most of the music of the second act of Siegfried is dominated by the beauty of the woodland scene in which it passes. But it has its grim moments, too. The Prelude suggests the dragon into which the Giant Fafner has transformed himself by means of the Rhine-gold's magic, and when the curtain rises we see the entrance of his cave. The Nibelung, Alberich, haunts the spot in the hope that some day he may snatch the treasures which were stolen from him. Wotan, father of the gods, in the guise of a wandering old man, comes in, and he and Alberich meet. No sooner has the god gone than Siegfried and the Dwarf Mime appear, the dwarf leading the hero to the dragon's lair, hoping that whoever wins in the battle, there may be some chance for him to seize the spoil. 
Then there follows the beautiful music of the forest, at the end of which the dragon wakes and Siegfried slays him. The monster's blood on his hand as he touches it with his lips gives him the power to understand the birds and beasts, and even of knowing what passes in the minds of his fellow men. Thus he realises the treachery which lurks behind the fair words of Mime. He kills Mime, and Alberich's hideous laughter can be heard from his hiding place. Again the music of the forest rises above the motives of conflict and evil, and now there is blended with it a new theme as Siegfried listens to the forest bird ; it tells him of the maid who sleeps on the fire-girt rock, and leads Siegfried towards her.
