Overture, Fidelio 
Although this is the only overture which bears the name of Beethoven's one opera, that one opera has no fewer than four overtures ; the other three are all called Leonora-I, 2, and 3. After its first appearance, under most unhappy conditions-for Vienna was occupied by a victorious enemy-the opera was drastically altered ; Beethoven revised it again for later productions, recomposing, or at least re-modelling, the overture each time; the final version was produced in 1814 and this was the overture for it. 
The overture begins with four bars which sound like a stern command ; a plaintive melody on horns with clarinets follows, and the stern opening is repeated. Then a slow section follows, beginning sadly and rising to a strong climax, after which the main quick section of the overture appears powerful and vigorous. Towards the end we hear once more the alternations of stern vigour and plaintiveness with which the Overture began, and there is a very quick section to bring it to a close.

Although the C major Piano Concerto of Beethoven is numbered as No. i, it was actually written after the No. 2 in B flat. An early work, it belongs to his first period when he was influenced by Haydn. It is a graceful work containing much fine music, and for the period it was written, the style of the writing for the piano is quite brilliant. 
Evlyn Howard-Jones , who is to play the solo part, is one of our foremost interpreters of the music of Beethoven and Brahms. He began his musical life at the age of twelve as a deputy church organist, and three years later rose to be chief organist. He then entered the Royal College of Music and won several scholarships, and after a few years went to Germany to finish his musical education under Eugene d'Albert. Mr. Howard-Jones is equally well known as a fine pianist in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Holland, Scandinavia, America and Canada.

Beethoven himself conducted the first performance of the seventh symphony on December 8, 1813. The concert was given in aid of wounded Austrian soldiers. Playing in the orchestra were many famous musicians and composers : Romberg, Spohr, Mayseder, Dragonetti were amongst the strings ; Hummel and Meyerbeer played the drums, Moscheles had the cymbals, and Salieri kept time and order in the percussion department. As described by Spohr, Beethoven's conducting was of the vehement acrobatic order. In Austria the symphony scored a great success. In Germany, however, opinions were against it. Weber considered Beethoven now ripe for the madhouse. London voted it vague, dissonant and too long. But this was all a very long time ago. Today this symphony is considered one of Beethoven's greatest works. Wagner aptly called it the ' Apotheosis of the Dance '.
