Act I of Wagner's Opera 'Siegfried'

In the first Act, Siegfried grown to sturdy and fearless manhood, is under the guardianship of Mime the Nibelung. He comes laughingly into their hut with a bear which he has caught in the woods, and with which he terrifies the dwarf in boyish glee. Mime has the two pieces of the broken sword of Siegmund, the boy's father, and has sought again and again to weld them, only to have the weapon broken by the boy's strong hands. 
Wotan, in the guise of a wandering old man, has visited the dwarf, and told him that only one who knows no fear can make a new weapon of the broken pieces. Mime learns, by adroit questioning, that nothing has ever taught Siegfried what it is to be afraid, and, accordingly, he sets him to work to weld the broken sword. The boy files it down and melts it, blowing up the forge to a white heat, and then with; mighty hammer blows forges a new weapon with which he splits the anvil in two..... 
Act 11 is occupied with the killing of the dragon (Fafner) by Siegfried, who thus becomes possessed of the Ring and the Tarnhelm. A bird lells him of Briinnhilde and leads the way to her fire-surrounded rock. 
At the beginning of the third act 
Wotan explains to Erda, Goddess of the Earth, that he and the old gods will abdicate and leave the world to Siegfried's and Briinnhilde's rule. The storm which accompanied Wotan's entry passes over, and Siegfried confronts the Wanderer, as Wotan is calling himself. With a blow of the sword he had forged himself from the splinters of his father's weapon, he cuts in two the old god's spear of world dominion, and plunges into the lames which surround the rag. 
The scene changes to the summit where Briinnhilde lies asleep. Siegfried wakes her and she sings a joyous greeting to the light. Then, recognising the hero who had ome to win her as his bride, she bids him welcome, and the opera closes with an exultant love duet.
