Scene : The Interior of St. Katherine's 
Church 
THE OVERTURE ended, the curtain rises on the scene of St. Katherine's Church n Nuremberg. Eva, with her maid, Mngdalena, is listening to the service. Walther is gazing admiringly at her. As she leaves the church he speaks to her, and learns that she is to be the bride of the victor at tomorrow's song-contest. Walther determines to comrete and win. In this he is helped by David, Sach's apprentice, who does his best to coach him. Presently the Mastersingers arrive to test intending candidates. Walther claims to be heard, and sings to the assembled Mastersingers, one of whom is Beckmesser, the ' marker '. Beckmesser hopes to win Eva for himself, and marks him ruthlessly. Walther is accordingly rejected, but, the meeting having broken up, Hans Sachs , who is attracted to the young knight, ponders how he can help one who he is persuaded has in him the makings of a more than ordinarily gifted candidate for the Guild.
