Oue of Mussorgsky's friends, the architect Hartmann, who died at an early age, left a number of very original drawings and water-colours. They were gathered together for an exhibition and aroused"a good deal of interest. Mussorgsky, ior whom the pictures had the special attraction 'of being a friend's work, was a frequent visitor; the idea struck him one day that many of the sketches would lend themselves well to translation into music, and the result was a volume for pianoforte, consisting of a preamble and ten pieces, each of which bears the name of one of Hartmann's pictures. Most of these explain themselves, so deftly does Mussorgsky's music bring them before us. In The Gnome, for instance, the misshapen rhythms are obviously the limping, stumbling gait of the forbidding creature, and the thrumming, lilting measure in The Old Castle is a minstrel's song of bygone days. The origin of The Witch's Hut was a design for a clock, which represented the hut of the famous witch of Hussian folklore, Baba-Yaga, mounted on fowl's claws. The music depicts Baba-Yaga riding through the air seated in a mortar and propelled by a pestle, her usual mode of progress according to popular legend. For The Great Gate of Kiev, Hartmann had designed a massive gateway crowned by a cupola in the shape of a helmet, and the music suggests the grandeurs of the pageantries that, in the imagination, pass beneath it.
