Four days after today's ceremony of naming and dedicating, the seventh Southern Cross will start on her twelve thousand miles journey to the Solomon Islands. The Melanesian Mission began with the tours of Bishop Selwyn in 1849, and ever since 1855, the mission vessel, carrying the Bishop round his island diocese, together with stores, books, and converts, has been called the Southern Cros8. The new ship will be stationed at Siota, Florida, in the Solomons.

The opera, from which this overture is taken, was broadcast from Belfast in 1929, with a new libretto and with the score revised and edited by Professor Donald Tovey. The music was composed by Schubert in his sixteenth year, and already his great gift of melody is abundantly manifest in this jolly little opera of sentiment.   
This Serenade, one of the two Brahms wrote early in his career, is the first of his published works for full orchestra. It is built up in the traditional form used by Mozart and the others of his predecessors, and contains the two delicate and exquisite Minuets which so often appear as an item by themselves in concert programmes.
