Professor of Literature, University of Essex
Professor Davie suggests that the swing from science which has been increasingly noted in sixth forms is less alarming than It might at tirst appear. He argues that the English as a race may have a unique talent as custodians of the past. and that it would be no ignoble pursuit for our universities to aim at preparing young people to exploit this talent as writers and historians, both here and abroad.
