1: Disaster and Revival
Introduced by RICHARD HISCOCKS. Professor ot International Relations at the University of Sussex
From the destruction of the Second World War the Federal Republic of Germany has emerged as a rreat industrial nation and the world's second largest exporter. Britain is continually told that the Germans work harder and plan better to produce economic sucress: but the British attitude to Germany and the Germans remains ambivalent. This first programme looks at West Germany's reconstruction through the eyes of some of those who were responsible for it and examines the German repudiation of the past.

First in a series of conversations with eight painters and two composers.

Barnett Newman talks to David Sylvester.
John Richarson, art critic, introduces the programme.
Harold Cohen, painter, comments on the 'meaning' of Newman's paintings.
In spite of the special admiration for his work on the part of several English artists and critics, Newman has remained for most people the great unknown of the first generation of New York abstract painters.

A talk from Geneva by Lord Chalfont
Minister of State at the Foreign Office with special responsibilities for disarmament
A draft treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons will be tabled shortly at the eighteen-nation disarmament conference at Geneva. Where do the real objections come from? What is the position of Federal Germany? How do Euratom and the International Atomic Energy Authority fit into the system of verification and control? Does support for a non-proliferation treaty conflict with Britain's approach to the European Economic Community?
