Andre Betetlle , Reader in Sociology at the University of Delhi, is French on his father's side. Brahmin Indian on his mother's. He believes that the debate about the influence of the traditional caste system is diverting attention from new kinds of social inequality which are growing to be an important feature of Indian society.
