The Left
Compiled and narrated by CONSTANTINE FITZGIBBON
The Thirties were a period of political alignment, in some cases more apparent than real. The division between Right and Left. particularly once the Spanish Civil War had started, seemed absolute. It was the signing of the Nazi-Soviet Pact in August 1939 that showed how basically fallacious this cleft was.

by RACHEL WALL
Lecturer in Contemporary International History in the University of Oxford
Is ' contemporary history ' a contradiction in terms? Or simply an arbitrary ' most recent chunk ' of modern history? Or just scholarly comment on current affairs? Rachel Wall explores the view that it is none of these things, but a basic rethinking of the aims, methods, and content of historical study: a rethinking deeply involved with our strategies for action in the present and future.

The first of two programmes compiled and narrated by J. M. COHEN
The Demolition Men: Villon. Mayakovsky, and the Beats
Mr. Cohen examines the claim of the Chilean poet Nicanor Parra that every important poetic movement has been followed by an anti-poetic reaction. In disputing this claim he advances his own definition of anti-poetry and Illustrates his argument by poems chosen from a wide field. This programme considers the negative aspects of anti-poetry, his second the undoubted positive Qualities he finds in it.
