Simon de Montfort, of French descent, is a hero of English history, and was described by a contemporary as 'one of the wisest and stoutest warriors in England'. He issued the writ that first summoned the merchant and the trader to sit beside knight, baron, and bishop in the parliament of the realm. The England of his own day considered him not so much a reformer of the government as a champion of righteousness.
His contests with Henry III belong to history. In 1264 he took up arms and routed the king at Lewes, and for 1 year became virtually dictator of England, but he was then to be defeated and killed at Evesham by the king's son, the future Edward I.
