When we consider the number and variety of insects that feed on vegetation, we may well be surprised that our crops ever manage to reach maturity. As a rule, insects do not feed indiscriminately, for each species is found on only a few different kinds of plant, and feeds on some special part of the plant. Thus, the aphis of broad beans sucks the plant juices ; leather-jackets (the grub of the daddy-long-legs) eat plant roots ; the caterpillar of the wood leopard moth bores into the shoots of trees ; the larva; of the apple sawfly bore into the sides of the apple and eat out a large cavity as the fruit grows ; the caterpillar of the magpie moth destroys the leaves of currant and gooseberry bushes and plum trees. Short accounts of the life history of typical insect pests will be given, and attention will be drawn to the stage in their life history at which they attack plants.

IVOR JOHN (tenor) The Frank Walker Octet was formed in 1927 and began broadcasting during the following year, and since that time has regularly appeared before the microphone. Frank Walker was bom in Shipley, Yorkshire, in 1903. At the age of eight he appeared as a solo violinist on Worthing Pier and later went to the Royal College of Music to study the 'cello. Frank Walker 's Octet has always possessed a distinguished personnel and many well-known instrumentalists, including F. Weist-Hill (violin), Norbert Wethmar (violin), Robert Murchie and Gordon Walker (flute), and Charles Draper (clarinet), have at one time or another been members of the Octet.

John Armstrong is one of the few English Lieder singers who have won an international reputation. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later in France, Germany, and Italy. He has made several radio tours which have included visits to Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hilversum, Stockholm, and Oslo. Some years ago Mr. Armstrong, with Lilian Harrison , broadcast from the chief German stations a programme of English song and poetry.

I read it through ; it agrees with the mood I am in ; and at once the appropriate music is fitted to it. I am in a musical frame of mind, and all I want is the right poetic vessel into which to pour my ideas. If good luck throws this in my way, a satisfactory song results.'
