British HistorY-5 'The Forty-Five'
RHODA POWER
Today Schools are to hear about Charles Edward Stuart , grandson of James II, and known as ' Bonnie Prince Charlie' or ' The Young Pretender '. Before he set out from Navarre in 1745 to try and regain the crown for his father, James, 'The Old Pretender' (claimant to the throne), he must have thrilled his father by writing him a letter of which this is an extract :
' Sir,—I believe Your Majesty little expected a courier at this time, and much less from me ; to tell you a thing that will be a great surprise to you. I have been, above six months ago, invited by our friends to go to Scotland. and to carry what arms and money I could conveniently get; this being, they are fully persuaded, the only way of restoring you to the crown..... Your Majesty cannot disapprove a son's following the example of his father. You yourself did the like in the year '15. ... Your Majesty's dutiful son, Charles P.'
This afternoon you are to be taken back to the year of the rebellion of 1745—to meet some of the Jacobites.
