by HARRIET COHEN
The Bach Book, from which these two choral preludes are drawn, has a pleasant history. Twelve British composers, anxious to do homage and to show their gratitude to Harriet Cohen , conceived the idea of transcribing for pianoforte, each in his own way, a work of Bach and dedicating the whole as a collection to Miss Cohen. William Walton and Constant Lambert , whose transcriptions are in this programme, are amongst the twelve composers. (First performance in England)
Haydn's Adagio, of which this is said to be the first performance in England, was originally published in Brunswick, but has been out of print for very many years, and although a complete edition of Haydn is in preparation, this little work has not yet been included. The version in use by Miss Cohen is that transcribed from the manuscript in the Berlin State Library by Professor Henderson, of Glasgow.
