Mr. HuaH THOMAS: Nail-making by Women
MR. HUGH THOMAS has collected some highly interesting information about a few of the traditional crafts that have survived from the past into the present age of machinery, and he will talk about them in a short series of morning talks this month. Today he tells of the midland craft of nail-making, carried on mainly by women workers with small forges in their back gardens, that produces and finds a market for nails of every shape and size, from the smallest tack to the large bolts that decorate the gates of His Majesty's prisons.
Future talks will tell of the out-of-the-way crafts of salmon-catching, lavender-water making, and chair-making.

A NOTHER short series of talks for September begins tonight. The general theme is the recommendation of the recent Gorell Committee, which issued last June a comprehensive report on design in industry. The report, supported by the artist-craftsmen in many vital industries, asserts that good design under mass-production conditions is needed by the public, economical to produce and essential as a basic selling point for British goods of quality. Many manufacturers have accepted the challenge, and undertaken to employ approved artists to design for commercial production. Modern tendency in architecture, interior decoration, and kitchen design will be discussed, and the manufacturers' and the consumers' views will also be represented.
