The time is exactly ten years after the date of Antonio's trial in The Merchant of Venice

Characters:
PORTIA, a rich lady of Belmont, wife to Bassanio NERISSA, formerly her maid; wife to Gratiano
JESSICA, Shylock's daughter and wife to Lorenzo. BASSANIO, a Venetian, living in Belmont
ANTONIO, a retired merchant of Venice, living near Bassanio
DOCTOR BELLARIO a lawyer of Padua and cousin to Portia GRATIANO and LORENZO Venetian friends of Bassanio living in Belmont
YOUNG LORENZO, son to Jessica and Lorenzo
LAUNCELOT GOBBO, Lorenzo's servant
BALTHASAR, Portia's steward
STEPHANO, a young servant in Portia's house
SHYLOCK, a Jew of Venice

The entire action of the play takes place in less than twenty-four hours, starting in Portia's house at Belmont in the early evening; then to a bedroom in the house of Lorenzo and Jessica in Belmont, a few hours later; and finally ending in the garden of Portia's house, the next morning.
