Mrs. Matilda Parsons ia preparing tea for her lodger, Captain Emmanuel Cook. She has discovered that he is 'partial to shrimps' and she makes it her business to please him, in spite of the fact that he declares himself proof against matrimonial entanglements.
Emma Dowsett, an ill-natured spinster, is the snake in the grass, but the widow is more than a match for her.
