The Station Military Band
conducted by Warwick Braithwaite

In 1880 the University of Breslau made Brahms a Doctor of Philosophy, and this Overture was written expressly for the occasion. The title may sound rather solemn, but the Overture is one of the gayest pieces of music Brahms wrote. It was originally scored for Full Orchestra, with plenty of 'percussion'-Kettle Drums, Big Drum, Cymbals and Triangle. Today we hear it in an arrangement for Military Band.
The chief themes are all well-known German students' songs. Some of them are familiar also to us in England.

Appeal on behalf of 'The Newport and Monmouthshire Blind Aid Society', by Councillor Cyrus T. Clissett.

One of the few charitable causes that appeal to all of us who have imagination and sympathy with the afflictions of other people is that of the blind. The curse of blindness is a thing of which we all have some experience; few indeed have never known or met one of its victims, and been impressed with the cheerful fortitude that almost always characterizes them. These memories will be a powerful aid to Councillor Clissett's appeal tonight.
