The story of Judas Maccabeus, which is being broadcast today from Daventry Experimental Station, will be found on page 331.
This extract is Judas's reply to the Israelites, when they express their joy and pride in his victory. He thanks them, but bids them 'look up to Heaven! To Heaven let glory and all praise be given.... It was the Lord that for His Israel fought....' Then, in the succeeding air, we have a reflection on man's frailty, without the aid of God: -
'How vain is man who boasts in fight
The valour of gigantic might,
And dreams not that a hand unseen
Directs and guides this weak machine'.
Schubert's song is a beautiful evocation of the spirit of peace. 'Come, then, to me, and never more depart; let this pure light fill my soul'. is its plea.
