A mysterious blindness has struck everyone who watched the brilliant flashes that lit the whole sky two nights ago. The streets of London are full of groping, desperate, hungry people, for all gas and electricity services have broken down. Bill Masen at first imagines he alone has escaped with his sight but he rescues Josella from a blinded tough.
The general calamity gives their chance to the triffids, highly poisonous carnivorous plants, with the power of lumbering about on their stubby roots. These monstrosities were extensively farmed for the sake of their valuable oils, but now they are beginning to break out of their enclosures.
Bill and Josella escape from the chaos in the streets into a luxurious flat whose owners have disappeared. They see a searchlight in the sky, and realise that there must be other sighted people left.
