Mrs. Freeman organised a meeting of Parkwood Hill children on the common, at which enough money was collected to save Tompkins' horse. Her new land-lady turned out to be a friend of Elsie's. Grandfather Dale agreed to send Robbie back to Berwick, but before he could be put on the train the dog was taken ill through eating some slug killer in the garden; he recovered and the Dales decided he must stay with Grandfather. Mrs. Freeman relented and gave Mrs. Dale her new address, but refused to consider coming back. Edward Fielding told Mrs. Dale that Elsie's fussing was driving him mad.
