Mr. Fulton went to see Miss Kendrick and persuaded her to come back to work for him; Fickling and Sally both felt he was wrong to overlook the theft. Rachel Guest told Fulton she had sold her cottage and was staying with friends in town; she could not bear visiting Denby Harris in prison so frequently. Mrs. Freeman let Mrs. Dale understand she was going to Brighton for a few days, but confided in Bob, who took her to the station, that she was actually going up to King's Acre, because a letter she had received from Grandfather Dale had made her worried about his health.
