Mrs. Maggs decided to let Dotty and Renee come to Kenton, and they moved in. Mr. Fulton went to see Miss Kendrick and persuaded her to come back to work for him; Fickling and Sally both felt he was wrong to overlook the theft. Rachel Guest told Fulton she had sold her cottage and was staying with friends in town; she could not bear visiting Denby Harris in prison so frequently. Mrs. Freeman let Mrs. Dale understand she was going to Brighton for a few days, but confided in Bob, who took her to the station, that she was actually going up to King's Acre, because a letter she had received from Grandfather Dale had made her worried about his health.
