'Towards the end of 1940 the R.A.F., particularly Bomber Command, were suffering a number of unnecessary losses of aircraft which, although they had finished their operations, yet because of the weather or other causes, were unable to return to their own bases or find an alternative fit airfield.' (From a Fighter Command document, 1945.)
This programme describes the birth and the development of the service organisation whose task it became to bring safely to the dark haven of blacked-out Britain hundreds of similar aircraft and their crews.
