Rina Welan meets members of the Northampton Church Lads' Brigade as they take part in a course organised by the local fire brigade, covering most aspects of fire prevention, rescue, and assistance

At 6.40 approximately Patricia Hickin in the Birmingham studio puts through an emergency call to the control room of Northampton Fire Station. Christopher Corden is on hand to describe its reception and jumps on to the engine as it speeds to the outbreak. At the scene of the 'fire' Diana Carter is high up in a smoke-filled room. Listeners can hear a second-by-second description from both commentators as the rescue proceeds.
