Bright and cheery music on records
Albert Marland and his Rococo Orchestra
listeners may be puzzled at the us< of the word ' Rococo ' in connection with music. True, in the accepted sense, the word means florid and over-embellished and is usually applied to certain eighteenth-century architecture and furniture. As long ago as 1920, however, it began to creep into the musical language and has come to mean very much the same as ' Baroque,' which itself has a very close affinity with the original rococo style.
Thus Albert Marland 's Rococo Orchestra sets out to play all sorts of music in a style which one associates with a bygone age, and it is done by the introduction of Jle most unexpected instruments for a modern orchestra — harpsichord and mandolins — which, with the blend of strings and three flutes produces one of the most novel and interesting sounds on the air today. This unusual musical programme can be heard every Sunday morning for the next six weeks. Edward Nash
