Part 2
Hoist's orchestral suite ' The Planets * owes its origin to the composer's interest in astrology, though his daughter Imogen has said that once he had thought of the underlying idea ' he let the music have its way with him.' Three of the most popular movements are to be played tonight. ' Mars, the Bringer of War,' with its relentless rhythm (in five-four time) and mounting chords on the brass, is succeeded by ' Venus, the Bringer of Peace,' in which a horn, flutes, and oboes (and later two harps) usher in a piece of music that envelops us in a seraphic calm. ' Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity' (the fourth movement of the Suite) is notable for its lively tunes which, in the middle section, give way to a melody sometimes sung as a patriotic hymn. H.R.
