Under present-day conditions all towns and cities that maintain, or help to maintain, a symphony orchestra are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the cost The problem has come to a head in Bournemouth where the Corporation recently decided to disband their municipal orchestra after a continuous existence of more than fifty years. The three chief speakers tonight are well qualified to discuss the subject: Sir Steuart Wilson, who is now the Deputy General Administrator of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, has, in the past been both Head of Music of the BBC and Music Director of the Arts Council; Stephen Lloyd is Chairman of the Management Committee of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; and Hardie Ratcliffe is General Secretary of the Musicians' Union.
