A programme for children under five
Clearly our under-fives love stories about teddy bear for they ask to hear them over and over again. Tomorrow they can listen once more to Mary Godden's tale of ' The Teddy With Only One Ear.' An illuminating comment about this story came to us from a little group of youngsters who listen regularly together to our programmes. ' That story about the teddy bear,' they said. ' was very worrying. People shouldn't have laughed at his odd ears. They should have pretended not to notice! ' Comments such as this show us frequently how little the charge of ' passive ' listening can be levelled at our audience. A story for them is not simply a series of events, to be accepted as it comes, it is an experience in which they participate, in which their sympathies are strongly engaged and their critical faculties exercised. In this story, for example, the child who made the comment quoted was obviously deeply concerned for the feelings of the teddy and consequently critical of the behaviour of the other characters. This active quality of our children's listening is something valuable, for it is a safeguard against that mass impact which the radio medium necessarily involve. Elizabeth A. Taylor
