An account of the execution for treason of Thomas Seymour
Compiled from contemporary documents by ALISON PLOWDEN
After the death of Henry VIII in January 1547, Edward Seymour , Earl of Hertford, became Protector of the Realm and guardian of the nine-year-old successor to the throne, Edward VI. Hertford's younger brother, Thomas Seymour , dissatisfied with his office of Lord High Admiral and seeking further advancement, sought to overthrow his brother by plots which involved the young King Edward, his father's widow Katharine Parr , and his half-sister.Princess Elizabeth-later to become Queen of England. Charged with treason, Seymour was refused public trial, condemned by a Bill of Attainder, and executed in March 1549.
