Tamzin and Rissa, Meryon and Roger have disinfected themselves, so as not to bring infection with them to Castle Farm. Mr. Merrow, the farmer, has met with an accident, and a doctor has taken him off to hospital for an immediate operation. Mrs. Merrow goes to be near her husband, and the four friends are left with Mike Merrow and his young adopted brother, Joseph, to keep things going on the farm.
