When Philip discovers that Mildred Rogers and Harry Griffiths have left London he is dumbfounded and decides to go for a holiday at Blackstable. On his return he starts work as an outpatients' clerk at a hospital. One of his patients is Thorpe Athelny, a forth-Tight middle-aged man, who is Press representative of a large store. He talks to Philip about Spanish art and literature. When Athelny leaves the hospital he invites Philip to meet his wife and family.
Philip now visits the Athelnys every
Sunday, and one evening when returning home he sees Mildred Rogers. She looks ill, and Philip suggests that she comes to live at his lodgings to look after the house in return for her keep. This she thankfully agrees to do.
