5 — 'The Search'
Philip Carey arrives in Paris, where he is to study art at Amitrano's School. He takes a room in the Latin Quarter and soon feels that he has been in Paris all his life. His friend Herbert Lawson, who is already there, takes him along to the studio. Here Philip is introduced to Fanny Price, an earnest, unprepossessing girl who takes her work very seriously and is determined to become a great artist.' In her blunt, uncouth manner she tries to help Philip with his drawing, and his friends even suggest that she is in love with him. It is during this period of his life that he meets many Latin Quarter ' characters,' including Cronshaw, a minor poet and philosopher.
