Talk by Ben Duncan
The speaker came to Oxford in 1950 as a Henry Fellow, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In this talk he explains why his experiences of settling down in a new environment more nearly resembled those of the traditional 'Yank at Oxford' than those of most other American students in Oxford today.

Overture: Beckus the Dandipratt Malcolm Arnold 8.11 app. Concerto for coloratura soprano and orchestra Gliere 8.25 app. Symphony No. 5, in C minor Beethoven PART 2 at 9.15 Symphonic Studies Alan Rawsthorne
9.40 app. Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1, in A Georges Enesco
'Dandipratt' is an old word for 'urchin.' and Malcolm Arnold's Overture, skilfully written as it is, presents a vivid picture of a young, self-confident rascal, sauntering along, with his eyes open for any kind of mischief. The prominent use of a cornet helps to establish one atmosphere. There is an episode, about two-thirds of the way through, which suggests that Beckus's pranks, like those of Till Eulenspiegel, provoke the intervention of Authority. But Beckus, unlike Till, is allowed to go on his way and towards the end even his spiv-like heart has a spasm of sentiment. Then suddenly, wish a quip on his lips and a perky smile, he disappears.
