Appeal on behalf of the Nurses' Fund for Nurses by Kay Hammond
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to [address removed]
For twenty-seven years this Fund has been helping nurses of a paat generation who worked devotedly for the tiny salaries then prevailing. Unable to make provision for their old age, many of tthem, now frail and aged, live lonely and forgotten, their old-age pension insufficient to meet the heavy cost of living. This Fund helps them with regular or emergency grains, gives advice in difficulty, sends them birthday and Christmas presents-in short, makes them feel that they are not quite forgotten but have a friend in need.
The principle of this Fund is to use money contributed to give immediate help, therefore its work is dependent on regular support from friends
by Charles Dickens
Adapted and produced by Charles Lefeaux in twelve episodes
After running away from Dotheboys Hall, Nicholas and Smike reach London and go to Newman Noggs' lodgings for shelter. Here, Mr. and Mrs. Kenwigs are celebrating their wedding anniversary. Newman takes Nicholas in, telling him that his uncle, Ralph, has received a lying letter from Fanny Squeers.
Kate starts work in Madame Mantalini's dress-making establishment, where she suffers indignities at the hands of Mr. Mantalini, Miss Knag, the forewoman, and the customers. She is then asked by Ralph to act as hostess at a dinner he is giving to business acquaintances who include Lord Frederick Verisopht and Sir Mulberry Hawk. Their behaviour is so familiar and insulting that she leaves. Next day, Ralph calls upon Mrs. Nickleby to tell her that Nicholas has left Dotheboys Hall, taking with him an orphan boy and a garnet ring belonging to Mrs. Squeers. Nicholas denies the charges, but, in order that Ralph shall not withdraw aid from his mother and sister, leaves to seek his fortune.
