Lennox Berkeley 's String Trio, a masterly essay in a difficult medium, was first played at a Gerald Cooper concert in London in 1944. Its three movements range from the brisk yet lyrical opening movement (Moderato), through the tender simplicity of the Adagio, to the finale (Allegro) in which elements of humour and drama are happily combined. .
