When F. Spencer Chapman was on the British Arctic Air-Route Expedition of 1930, he and the other members of the expedition learned to support themselves by the Eskimo methods of hunting seals, not only by pursuing them on the sea-ice but by harpooning them from the kayak-the Eskimo canoe made of drift-wood and covered with seal-skin.
