The second of two talks by Canon V. A. Demant , Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral
Theology at Oxford
In his first talk Canon Demant developed the theme that civilisation is in danger when men have come to believe only in civilisation. When that happens they must re-examine the things they have taken for granted. The question of self-interest is at the heart of this re-examination. In many cases our duty and our desires coincide and there is a true kind of self love that corresponds with love of God and the neighbour. It is the type of civilisation we live in that largely determines which of men's desires are in conflict or agree with what is the human good.
