BBC Orchestra and BBC Chorus
Conductor, Sir Adrian Boult
Chorus: Blessed are they that mourn
Chorus: Behold all flesh is as the grass
Baritone and Chorus: Lord, make me to know the measure of my days on earth
Chorus: How lovely is thy dwelling-place
Soprano and Chorus: Ye now are sorrowful
Baritone and Chorus: Here on earth have we no continuing place
Chorus: Blessed are the dead
As Brahms did not follow any orthodox religious creed it is therefore not surprising, that his Requiem is unorthodox in design. For instance, it does not include a prayer for the dead. In a letter to the organist of Bremen Cathedral, Brahms said that when he wrote the work he had the whole of humanity in mind and that he selected his text from those parts of the Bible and the Apocrypha that would best serve his particular musical and philosophic purposes - 'because I am musician, because I needed them.' The philosophic idea behind the text is the struggle between fear and hope that so often, occupies the minds of who contemplate the of death. The problem is finally resolved in terms of divine consolation; The superb musical handling of this theme is undoubtedly one of the highest flights of Brahms's genius.
