Prologue and Act 1
At the beginning of the nineteenth century Hoffmann wrote a whole series of stories, from which Offenbach later selected three as the basis of his opera. linking them vaguely by means of a prologue and epilogue. The three tales chosen depict Hoffmann in love in turn with a beautiful doll, a soulless courtesan, and a delicate singer. Each time he is thwarted by some sinister character in the story. The prologue and epilogue show us Hoffmann at a later period. still pursuing his romantic idea, still thwarted by his evil genius. At the end he dreams of giving up love in favour of poetry-perhaps just one more of his illusions.
