The Holy Boy
From the Royal Exchange, London
Ireland, CeHo Sonata.
The combination of cello and piano has always presented the difficult problem of sonorities, but Ireland has succeeded where most composers have failed, with the result that the cello always stands out clearly and . is never obscured by the overwhelming power of the piano. The chief differences between the arrangement for viola by Lionel Tertis and the original work are in matters of pitch and expression marks. Although Ireland is very punctilious over the observance of his own expression marks in all his music, he has agreed to a number of alterations to suit the nature of the viola and Tertis's unique and commanding style as an interpretative artist.
